However, as we age, we lose volume in the lips, and they can appear drier, smaller and more wrinkled. Dermal filler can be effectively used to restore natural lip volume, smooth the texture of the lips, and provide a more hydrated appearance. Dermal fillers can also enhance the lips through contouring and correcting asymmetry by subtly changing the size and shape. As we age, we can expect natural shifts to the composition of the face – these affect the muscles, fat, skin and even bone structures. The changes result in a sagging of the skin and a decrease in facial volume – causing the face to appear tired, gaunt or lacklustre. We use dermal fillers to lift sagging skin, restore volume in the cheeks and create natural contours. Dermal fillers, such as hyaluronic acid, prevent premature ageing by plumping up the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and are highly effective in treating common issues such as sunken cheeks, jowls, and deep nose-to-mouth lines.

Tear Trough Before and After

The tear trough is a hollow area that begins in the inner corner of the eye and extends diagonally down to the cheek. A deep tear-trough forms a shadow beneath the eyes often called a “dark circle”. In some people, the shadow can extend along the cheek (known as the ‘nasojugal groove’) or towards the exterior corner of the eye (known as a ‘palpebromalar groove’). In all these instances (nasojugal groove, palpebromalar groove and tear trough), we use dermal filler injections to smooth the
area.

Tear trough filler is injected trough the cheek using a cannula. This ensures the treatment is painless and safe, with minimal risk of swelling, bruising or discomfort.

Fillers

Generally speaking, a fuller face is considered youthful and volume loss in the face is a sign of ageing. Fillers are products that are used to restore volume to the face with injections. Fillers can be used for getting rid of deep lines, depressions and grooves around the eyes and mouth, enhance lips and improve jaw line definition. They can be used almost anywhere in the body.

A variety of fillers is available and a few that we believe produce the best results, in our experience, are mentioned here. These include temporary hyaluronic acid fillers, such as Restylane®, Perlane and Juvéderm® and medium term volumizers, such as Sculptra™. Another option is to use one’s own fat, i.e. fat transplantation; this is a permanent way of restoring volume in the face.

Perlane

Perlane, like Restylane®, is a dermal filler with long lasting effects. Once injected into the skin with an ultra-fine needle, Perlane adds volume and helps to diminish fine lines. It is made of hyaluronic acid.

The hyaluronic acid in Perlane simply supplements the body’s age-depleted hyaluronic acid to plump-up the lip or to raise the skin and ‘fill in’ the particular wrinkle being treated.

The difference between Restylane® and Perlane is the size of the particle (with Perlane containing more hyaluronic acid, i.e. it has larger particles). This means that Perlane does a better job of filling deep lines, while Restylane® is used in fine lines or in thin skinned people. Perlane is, therefore, an excellent treatment for wrinkle correction, lip enhancement, smile lines and deep folds.

During & After Treatment

Restylane® is injected directly into the skin in tiny amounts by an ultra fine needle, resulting in minimal discomfort. The procedure is simple and convenient and results are practically instantaneous.

If you have concerns about pain during injections, we will use anaesthetic to numb the area. After your treatment, you may have some redness or swelling, which will normally last less than 7 days. Sunbathing and cold outdoor activities should be avoided until any redness or swelling disappears.
